AmeriCares
Distributing disaster relief supplies to 137 countries is the main mission of AmeriCares. Founded by Bob and Leila Macauley, AmeriCares' first operation was an airlift of supplies to Poland in 1982, at the request of the Pope. AmeriCares also participates in domestic programs, such as free health care clinics, youth camping programs and home renovations for elderly, low-income and disabled people. The organization was also a major contributor to the relief efforts in New York and Washington, D.C. following the Sept. 11 attacks.
